On November 9th, 2020, I started my journey at Flatiron School in the Software Engineering program. Coming from a background that includes Ice Hockey, Comic Book Art, and English, Software Engineering was definitely something that I thought I’d never be doing. While I always thought of myself as a modern person who certainly was not living in the Stone Age when it came to technology, Software Engineering just did not seem like something I would naturally gravitate towards. After graduating from college, I attended The Kubert School, which is a school for commercial art. One of the best attributes of the education that a student receives at The Kubert School is detailed instruction on Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. At first, the programs seemed incomprehensible and frustrating. I remember early assignments on Photoshop where it would take seemingly endless amounts of hours to do simple tasks. However, within six months, the programs became second nature. Even things I had not been taught I began to figure out intuitively. I realized how much fun it was to be patient and just have fun figuring things out.

After learning how valuable it is to have knowledge of the Adobe programs, and how much fun they were to learn, I began setting my sights on other valuable skills that would enable me to be versatile and agile in my career. With that in mind, Software Engineering just seemed like the natural next step for me. It is just such a great skill to have, and for someone who is involved in visual arts, the aesthetic design of websites is exciting new ground to explore. So, here I am, starting a new endeavor. While it is challenging, and while there are some long nights, it is truly great to be learning such great skills that will hopefully provide exciting opportunities in the future.
